Can you crush Kalms Tablets?

The general instructions that is given for the use of Kalms tablets is that you should not crush the tablet and instead swallow it whole with water or some other non-alcoholic, non medicated liquid.

The ways in which various tablets and pills can be taken depends on what the medication is and what kind. Some medication and pills can be crushed and taken whereas others cannot.

For example, long extended release pills and tablets must not be opened, dissolved, or crushed since they are designed to deliver the medicine to your body slowly, over time.

If these extended release pills are crushed or chewed, the medicine may go into the body too fast, which can cause harm since it breaks down the formulation and causes adsorption too fast and all at once.

This fast absolution can cause various chemical levels to rise in the body too quickly leading to various effects that can be intolerable to some people.

In the cases of other drugs with special coating that are designed to protect the stomach lining from the effects of the drugs, crushing it can cause problems within the stomach due to the drug interaction with the stomach lining- causing nausea or vomiting etc.

Chewing it breaks down the formulation, causing unintended absorption all at once. This leads to blood levels that are too high, which may be intolerable to some.

In other cases, medications may have special coatings to protect your stomach or delay absorption until the drug gets into your intestines, so it won’t be destroyed by stomach acids.

Breaking these tablets destroys the coating, so again you might absorb the medicine too fast or make it ineffective. Or you could be inviting undue nausea and vomiting.

It is not possible for people who are not educated in the field or specialising in the field to understand which tablet is what kind unless they are informed by their doctors or by the packaging of the medication.

This is why it is important that users of various medications follow the doctor’s instructions and read the labels provided in the information packet or leaflet of the medication.

It is important that one do not crush the Klams tablet, because it has been specified so since it is an extended release drug,  and instead of crushing it- if you have a hard time swallowing it it is best to talk to your doctor about how you can make the intake of the drug easier.

If it has something to do with the dose and you want to reduce the dosage, instead of reducing the size of the tablet, talk to your doctor about reducing the dosage.
