What are Communication styles?

In everyday life, each person has a different way to communicate with each other- this pattern of communication is known as their communication style which helps them exchange information with other people.

There are four types: passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive and assertive.

Passive Communication style often fails to express one’s feelings and needs and often lacks outward and effective communication. Passive communication is signaled by lack of eye contact, poor body language, inability to say no, and often tend to follow others.

People with Aggressive Communication style are characterised by loud or demanding voice tone, intense eye contact, critical, intimidating, and are often attacking when speaking to others.  Their speech is often commands rather than requests.

Passive-aggressive communication style users often mutter to themselves rather than confront a person. They lack open communication and their body language reflects this in the form of folded arms or turning away. They might also give silent treatment to communicate their feelings, spread rumors, and while they are aware of their needs- they do not voice them.

Assertive communication is thought to be the most effective form of communication where people can express their own needs, desires, ideas and feelings, while also considering the needs of others.  One of the keys to assertive communication is using “I” statements, which indicates responsibility of one’s own feelings and behaviors without blaming other people.
