What are I-Statement worksheets?

What are I-statements?

It is a way for a person to take responsibility of their emotions and feelings and to put them across to the other people in a clear way so that the message and the person speaking is understood by others. 

The concept of the I statement was developed By Thomas Gordon who believed that You statements often shift blame to others which causes more conflicts to arise when blame is accused or expressed. 

So the I statements were developed to enable speakers to be assertive without blaming others so as to preserve the self-respect of the speaker as well as the other people involved. 

An “I” statement creates awareness within the speaker as well as others of the problems that are arising while also taking responsibility for their feelings and attributes towards other people. 

So that the problem is external to either people and blame is not put on one or the other person. This can help foster positive communications and also help others feel more stronger and at the same time help them build a healthier and more honest relationship with people. 

Many people do not communicate naturally with “I” statements, and it takes a lot of time and is proactive with a few mistakes here and there before being able to use them naturally.

An example of I-statement which has been taken from Goodtherapy (2018):

A teenage boy is annoyed by the fact that his parents remind him several times each night if he has completed his homework.

Common response would be something like “Lay off me!” or anger outbursts, slamming doors etc. 

“I” statement that is effective as a response can be “I feel frustrated and annoyed when I am reminded over and over to do my homework. I am old enough now to complete my homework without reminders.”
