Normally, people just categorise personality types into introverts, extroverts and ambiverts when in reality and also according to JUNGIAN THEORY (given by Carl Jung) , no one can just be a 100% introvert or extrovert. There is more to it. Jung believed that there are 4 basic psychological functions which our brain follows -:

  1. Extroversion vs Introversion
  2. Sensation vs intuition
  3. Thinking vs feeling
  4. Judging vs perceiving

This theory of Jung is also the inspiration behind the famous Myers-Briggs type indicator, which is also one of the most commonly accepted personality tests.

Definition of INTP Personality Type -:

INTPs are thinkers! They think out of the box, they are analytical and quite, they think about everything thoroughly and don’t just jump into conclusions.

INTP loves their personal space and alone time. Unlike the extroverts, who get charged by social gatherings and meetups, these things and too many people drain the INTPs out of their energy and they need to recharge and gain the balance by spending some time alone in solitude, thinking, reading and doing their thing.

These types of people love to talk about science, technology, architecture, mathematics and anything that demands a logical explanation. The mysteries of the universe call out to them and they crave to solve them. If you know an INTP, you would know how intriguing they can be!

INTP Relationships:

As i mentioned before, an INTP isn’t a people person. The INTP personality doesn’t have a huge group of friends, instead they have very few people they talk to freely. And once an INTP opens up to you, BAM! Congratulations, you just earned the privilege of getting a real closed up person to actually care about you. At times, it might feel like they don’t care about you, but they do! They just don’t know how to show their emotions well. Because of this, people often think that they are inconsiderate, insensitive and aloof when in reality, they are not. At least not for the people they care about.

An INTP might have commitment issues leading them to not trust anyone (even their partner). It is very difficult for them to trust anyone and once that trust gets broken, you might be given a second chance but things won’t be the same for them. They tend to detach themselves from people and things. So careful there! But another thing about them is that they are very loyal!

INTP People:

They think out-of-the-box. They are abstract thinkers and simple ideas just don’t appeal to them. They love thinking in the other direction, a direction no one ever thought existed! Probably that is what makes them so unique and creative in their own way!

The INTP hardly believes in the ultimate force that exists (GOD). We can say that they usually are NON-BELIEVERS. The INTP gives more value to intellect and knowledge than feelings or emotions.

They are known to focus on the big picture and they usually miss out on the small details. INTPs like to keep their options open and are not known to follow rules! They like to create them, break them and go at their own pace.

INTP In Public:

When with people, they like to maintain a rapport. In a social gathering, they are usually easy going and tolerant, but find it hard to keep themself from correcting people who don’t support their arguments with facts or are not rational with what they say! They usually skip the small talks (they hate small talks) and skip to the main topics. And they are REALISTS too! A tip to impress an INTP – TALK ABOUT SCIENCE AND ALL OTHER LOGICAL THINGS AND BACK UP YOUR OPINIONS WITH FACTS!

INTP Women And Their Struggles:

Being an Indian, and growing up, there used to be a show which i loved, called “sadda haq”. The female lead of the show sanyukta, showed strong characteristics of an INTP female. The general population of the INTP people is 3%. And only 5% are females, making INTPs the 4th rarest personality type! The INTP females often struggle with:

  • Connecting with other women
  • They like to stay with like minded people or alone
  • Have leadership qualities and are dominant, which some people cannot digest.
  • People often confuse their independence with them being EMOTIONLESS, which they are NOT.
  • They prefer taking things at their own pace.
  • Clothes and makeup are not their priority, books and intellectual things are!
  • They are usually sapiosexual (attracted to intellectual beings)
  • They DO NOT appreciate pushy people.
  • Relating to other females is a problem for them.

The INTP Children are known to stand out. They are unlike most of the kids. They like to be on their own, they are independent and they do not like anyone interfering with whatever they are doing. They do not like people taking any decisions for them or telling them what to do or what not to do.

They are known as a negative thing because at their age they need to interact more with people/children of their age. But this must not be confused with them wanting their own time. Giving them the space is equally important.

The INTP children can be extremely short tempered and are likely to throw tantrums when things don’t go their way. They are overly expressive with what they want but they don’t understand themselves or their own emotions. Their logical side tends to take over their emotional side, leaving them confused.

An INTP child needs to be free to explore his creativity from a young age. Not just the creativity but also the logical and imaginative thoughts need to be explored, opened and nurtured to make the child reach his full potential.

Just like the adult INTP, the INTP child cares more than he shows.

How to deal with an INTP -:

Being an INTP is not easy and dealing with one can be, well, quite exciting. Being one the rarest personality types, people struggle to understand them and they are often misunderstood. Once an INTP reaches his/her full potential, there is no stopping them.

There are many famous personalities who were INTP. Carl Jung, who gave this concept, himself was an INTP. Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, Socrates, among many others, were INTPs.

The INTP People just need someone to understand them and help them grow. Since they are not very emotional, they like others to show them that love, care and affection, but not too much or else it might backfire and they would end up feeling suffocated.

The INTP likes things to be short ,to the point with logic. They like it when people respect their personal space and don’t try to evade it! So till the time they get their personal space and get to do the things they love, they should not be difficult to deal with.

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

  • Carl jung

Carl Jung, the person who developed this theory of personality, was also an INTP. If we analyze this quote itself, it clearly indicates him being an INTP personality type. INTPs are thinkers. They focus more on the intelligence and the factual aspect of life than the emotional one. An INTP introspects. INTP knows themselves inside out and they seem to know the world that way too. Once an INTP reaches his/ her full potential, there is no stopping them.

FAQs: INTP personality type

Now, there are a lot of questions that might come into a person’s mind when talking about an INTP. Some of the most common questions are:

Is INTP a rare personality type?

How rare is the INTP personality type? INTP is one of the less common types in the population, especially for women. INTP consists of just 3% of the total population in general. Among men, it consists of 5% of the total population, while in women, the INTP personality is the 4th rarest and consists of just 2% women.

Do INTP care about looks?

The answer to this question is NO. An INTP doesn’t really care about looks. They would rather focus on reality and intelligence than looks. Looks are the last thing they would care about, except for the fact that they must look PRESENTABLE in front of people, but there might be days when you would see an INTP getting dressed up nicely and actually putting effort in that.

Are INTPs clingy?

No, INTPs are not clingy. Infact, they are the least clingy people. They love and respect personal space and they are also known for not really showing their emotions, affection to be specific.

Are INTP good liars?

As a matter of fact, INTP are excellent liars. With their sharp mind and quick thinking, they can make things look completely different and catching their Lie is also not easy! Probably because of their ability to overthink and back their answers by facts.

Are INTPs emotional?

Yes, INTPs are very emotional. Infact, they feel their emotions more strongly than most of the other personalities, but they don’t like to focus on their Emotional aspect at all.
