Here is a list of the MBTI personality Types of the characters from the TV show “The Office”- a 2005 American TV series in the form of a mockumentary that follows the everyday work lives of office employees in a fictional Company.

Michael Scott: ENTJ

Micheal scott, like all ENTJs, is extroverted and is a natural leader who is able to set goals for his team and is often able to motivate his team to meet those goals. 

He is a big dreamer and often has big goals even if he is unaware of how he can achieve these goals which makes his team doubt his abilities to be a leader. He is often unaware of people’s feelings and have a hard time empathizing and reading others emotions. 

Darryl Philbin: INTJ

Darryl Philbin is an INTJ who is ambitious and introverted or reserved. He is so ambitious and disciplined that he has been able to work his way up to management from the warehouse. 

He is extremely skilled and is often working to improve himself  which makes him a great employee however, he tends to have a hard time connecting with his coworkers. 

Dwight Schrute: INTP

Dwight is creative and is at times too logical that he is unable to read the room and instead tends to insist that he is always right. 

He is an introvert and is often shy of social events which is why he hates parties at the office. He is also very innovative which is why he tends to have new ideas all the time but these goals are never set into action. 

Erin Hannon: ENFP

Erin is someone who cares a lot for other people and can socialize well with others like most ENFP. However she tends to have her head in the clouds and is often idealistic. 

She is often viewed as the sunshine in the office because of her upbeat personality who is often driven to help make others feel better. 

Oscar Martinez: ISTJ

Oscar is very logical and often sticks to facts and details which is why he does a good job as an accountant and takes his job seriously. 

For him, as an ISTJ facts are important and so is the order of things which is why he is often seen as someone who likes to be right and often corrects others even at inappropriate times. 

Andy Bernard: ESFP

Any is someone who likes to be the center of attention and is often considered the entertainer of the entire list of characters.

Kelly is a very social person and is often driven to work. She has a big heart and is often seen to love and commit easily to her partners. She is also someone who is an idealist and a capable organised worker. 

Toby Flenderson: ISTP

Toby, like ISTPs, loves to be part of any problem solving challenges that he comes across in the workplace and is often striving for fairness based on facts and logic. 

As an introvert he is not chatty and does not seem to like being the point of attention and instead chooses to work fairly in the background which is why he is often underrated. 

Phyllis Vance: ESFJ

Phyllis is a warm extrovert who is socal and enjoys organising events that involve social interaction. She is also able to connect with other people and often feel empathy for others which could be why she called out one of her coworkers for cheating on their partners.

As a feeler and an introvert she is someone who avoids confrontation and is often diplomatic in conflict within the office. She is the quintessential conventional employee who likes rules and order, and often gets upset when these are not maintained. 

Because of how logical and structured she is, she is often very oriented in her foals and often do not like to waste time which is why she was quick to dump relationships that had no future.

What is MBTI?

The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-report assessment designed to identify a person’s personality type, strengths, and preferences. 

The MBTI personalities are a list of 16 personalities made up of four dimensions that are in the form of binarys- bidimensional factors that make up the personality type and characteristics. 

The MBTI questionnaire was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung’s theory of personality types.

The development of the MBTI personality inventory was based on the belief that it would help people understand themselves and thus, help people select more suitable careers that would lead to healthier and happier lives.

The MBTI questionnaire is a list of almost 100 items and based on the answers to the questions, people are identified as having one of 16 personality types.

It must be mentioned that there is no personality that is the best or is better than the others nor is the assessment a diagnostic tool for personality disorders. It is simply a tool that is used to help people understand their strengths and limitations, preferences, and also career choices.

The questionnaire itself is made up of almost 100 items that access the individual in four different areas.

  • Their interaction with the world.
    Their process of gathering information and understanding the world around the,
  • Their process of decision making
  • Their preferences of lifestyle or how they deal with the world around them/

These areas are expressed through four dichotomies:

Extraversion (E) – Introversion (I)

The extraversion-introversion dichotomy describes how people respond and interact with the world around them. 

Extraverts (also often spelled extroverts) are people who tend to be social and enjoy socialising as well as gain motivation and energy after interaction with other people. They also tend to be action oriented as in- do, think, do. 

Whereas introverts tend to enjoy deep meaningful interactions with a select few as opposed to large social interactions and tend to gain more energy when they are by themselves. They also tend to be people who think before they do. 

Sensing (S) – Intuition (N)

This dichotomy refers to how people make sense of the world around them. People who are sensing prefer to be realistic and tend to be attuned with the world from their five senses. They are also focused on facts and details that are concrete. 

Whereas people who are intuitive tend to be more abstract in their thinking and tend to be idealistis. They are also people who enjoy dreaming about various possibilities and tend to enjoy looking at the larger picture as opposed to details. 

Thinking (T) – Feeling (F)

This dichotomy refers to how people make decisions based on the information that they gathered from their sensing or intuition functions.

People who are thinkers tend to be more logical, and impersonal when weighing a decision- objective and reliant on facts whereas those who prefer feeling are more likely to consider people and emotions when arriving at a conclusion and tend to be subjective. 

Judging (J) – Perceiving (P)

People who score higher in judging tend to prefer structure, and like to be organised in their day to day life. Where People who lean toward perceiving are more open, flexible, and adaptable and enjoy freedom.
