How to write a Resignation letter due to family health reasons

Resigning from one’s place of work due to medical reasons and health issues of another family member is quite common.

When a family member is severely ill, most of one’s time is spent taking care of them. This can lead to exhaustion- both physically and mentally which can impact your ability to work and commit time to your workplace.

Resigning due to this can be a difficult decision to make, however it is an important decision to make and it is equally important that you are able to clearly put across your intent to resign.

A letter of resignation is a formal letter that documents and informs your employer about your decision to resign and no longer work for them, and it is a final effort to express your decision to leave your job.

The letter was originally in the form of handwritten or typed out letters that were mailed to the HR manager or your employer; however, today most employees email their employers and HR managers of their notice.

While it is not required that you share any information related to departure, putting your resignation in formal writing can be a cordial way to show your respect for the company you worked in while remaining professional.

According to TheBalanceCareers, it might be a good choice for you to disclose some information just to make it clear that it has nothing to do with any disappointments with the company which can allow you to keep the door open incase of a possible return.

The Balance Careers mention that you should explore leave benefits under the FMLA laws, to determine if it is possible for you to take leave instead of resign. However, companies will most probably require a doctor’s note in order to determine if you will receive certain benefits.

Let us look at a few things that are crucial aspects of writing a resignation letter on medical grounds:

Sender and Receivers details

The first thing that you include in your letter are the details of the receiver; that is, the name and position of your HR manager followed by the address of your workplace.

Example:

Christine D’souza

Easy Days Nursing Home

44 Madhya Marg

New Delhi, 437097 (indeed)

In some letters, you include the name and address of the sender first followed by that of the name and position of your HR manager followed by the address of your workplace.

Example:

Susan Holmes Nurse Practitioner

987 Crazy Legs Avenue, Apt. 34

Los Angeles, CA, 91054

[email protected]

February 17, 2019

Linda Lester

HR Manager

XYZ Hospital

90000 Health Care Road

Los Angeles, CA, 91054 (RequestLetters)

Introduction and notice of resignation

The next element is the body of the letter which begins with your addressing the receiver of the letter and clearing putting across the intent of the letter and your notice of resignation.

It is important that you mention that you are aware of the inconvenience caused by your departure and that you are apologetic about it. In this part, you can also include the period of your notice that you will be serving as per your employment contract.

Example:

I am writing to inform you of my resignation as Staff Nurse at Easy Days Nursing Home, effective two weeks from today. My last day of work will be on 30th Oct’ 2021. (indeed)

Reason of resignation

When it comes to disclosing the reason for your departure, you are not required to share every detail if you do not want to. You can simply state it for “Family reasons”.

However, if you are comfortable with it then you can mention how the medical condition of your family member is affecting your ability to work and perform in your role.

Example:

Because of the high activity level consistent with my work, I am no longer able to teach my students effectively, and I do not want them to be impacted by this. My doctor agreed with me that this is the best decision for all involved. (Thebalancecareers)

Example:

I was recently diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer. In the beginning, I felt that I could cope with medication, which is why I didn’t inform you. The recent chemotherapy that I went through, however, made me feel that I can no longer handle the hectic schedule or meet the deadlines given to me. If I continue working, I will not only be unfair to myself but to the company as well. (CoverLettersandResume)

A statement of gratitude

Resignation letters are the last professional impression an employee can make on their employers and colleagues, so it is advised that the letter remains neutral and warm while highlighting positive experiences you have had while working for them.

A warm resignation letter also ensures that you are able to maintain a positive relationship with your former place of work just in case you wish to work with them again.

Example letter:

Working at Easy Days has been a rewarding experience and I have enjoyed my time working with you. I learned a great deal about working successfully with a team. It was an honour to work with such dedicated staff who made Easy Days a place to receive compassionate care. I thank you for the training and opportunity to grow with you in my nursing career. (indeed)

Transition details

To maintain your professional attitude at work, you should include what you will be doing to help ease the transition of roles with your successor during the notice period as well as contact information.

Example:

If you feel it would be helpful, I would be happy to assist with the hiring and training of my successor over the next two weeks. Please contact me if you have questions. My email address is [email protected] and my cell phone number is 9745474523.(indeed)

Signature

Close the letter using polite words and include your contact details.

Example:

Respectfully yours,

Ashwin Mehta

[email protected]

9745474523.(indeed)

Dear Dr, Ortman,

It is with a heavy heart that I must immediately resign my position as Office Manager at Family Medical Practice due to a serious illness in my family. I will be moving to St. Louis in three weeks to begin caring for my parents, who have both fallen ill and require around the clock care.

I have explored other options and there is no other choice but for me to resign my position. There are two other office workers who have the capacity to immediately cover my duties. If you find that need my input on an issue, please do not hesitate to call my cell phone at 000-000-0000 or email me at [email protected]

I want to thank this time to thank you for all of the kindness you have shown myself and my family. I wanted you to know that I worked hard to take advantage of every opportunity you placed in front of me and I will never forget the way in which you made sure that I was always in a position to succeed. I am confident that the office will move forward just fine without me.

Sincerely Yours,

Respected Sir/Mam

This is to intimate you about my decision of leaving my current job due to certain family reasons.

I have been distracted lately in my work due to engagements in my family as my mother is suffering from a chronic illness. I would be required with her from now on as I want to spend the last few days with her.

I got very supportive teammates and manager and in the last few months, they proved to be an angel in disguise as they helped me in sharing the workload and I could manage to work flexibly.

It was a pleasure for me to work with such kind-hearted people and would definitely wish that our paths cross again in the future.

Dear Ms. Begum,

I am sorry to have to inform you that, for family reasons, I am resigning from my role as senior accounts administrator with Westcourt Industries. My last day will be next Friday, November 15, by which time I expect to have processed all outstanding invoicing and filing and created a spreadsheet of work to be handed over to my successor. As we discussed, I am very sorry to be leaving Westcourt Industries and would not even consider moving on were the demands on my time not so pressing.
