What Is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem can be understood as a person’s overall sense of their own value and worth based on a subjective evaluation of how they value themselves, appreciates themselves, or simply how much they like themselves. 

According to self-esteem experts, self-esteem can be understood as the favourable or unfavourable attitude one has towards themselves and it is believed that there are various factors that play a role in the development of one’s self esteem. 

These factors include general disposition, life experiences such as parenting and other childhood experiences with peers, age, social circumstances, beliefs and values. 

What are self-esteem building activities?

Self-esteem building activities are exercises that one can do on their own or under the guidance of a professional mental health service provider in sessions in order to help build a healthier sense of self-worth and value. 

These activities are developed to be used to help create an understanding of one’s sense from a healthy perspective as well as a sense of their lives and the people around them. 

Activities such as these can be helpful in helping individuals understand their rights, their skills and positive assets, and also help build mental and emotional resilience that can help them manage their day to day lives.

We Are

In this group activity, the students are asked to come together and find a common ground where they are all able to agree on something amongst themselves. 

Individuals and students are asked to find common ground amongst themselves and complete a list which demonstrates what makes them alike.

This can help them develop a sense of belongingness and bring a sense of cohesiveness in the group. 

Listing Traits

Here the individuals and the students simply make a list of their own positive character traits that make them a good friend, or good sister/brother to their siblings. 

Ask the entire group to desciev various scenarios where these traits were highlighted. Ask them to describe in detailed scenarios and ask them to explain how these traits are important to them and to people around them.

By helping the students list out various positive traits can help them discover strengths within them as well as build self esteem. 

The Interview

The next activity is called “The Interview”.

This is an activity which pairs up students, who interview each other. 

The students can take time to ask each other various questions to get to know each other on a deeper level. 

At the end of the sessions, students present their partners to the class through a brief summary of what they have learned. 

This provides the group to learn about each individual on a deeper level while also focusing on the positive assets of the individual rather than focusing on negatives. 

Compliment fan

In this activity, everyone sits around in a circle. 

And each member is given a pen and paper. 

The individual are then instructed to make a paper fan by folding the top down (by an inch) and flipping over the paper to do the same thing.Repeat this step until the entire sheet of paper has been folded down into a fan. 

Next, everyone writes their name down on the first fold.

Each player passes their fan over to the person next to them and each individual will have to write down something positive about the person the fan belongs to. 

Let the fan go around the entire circle. 

Once the fan makes it back to its original owner, give everyone a couple minutes to read the compliments. This activity can be a self esteem boosting activity aimed towards improving confidence. 

Totem

This is a fun game where each player in the group takes turns constructing a totem for other people in the group out of an animal card and a quality card that best describes the person.

Once the totmes are created, each member takes time to reflect on why they chose those cards to describe their partner and takes the opportunity to reflect on other’s strengths while also building a deeper positive relationship. 

Winner/Loser

For this activity, the group is divided into pairs where each individual in the pair talks about a past negative experience in detail regarding what happened, how it affected them, what they did in response etc. 

Then the other person in the pair, the listener, presents the same story but the focus is on the positive aspects of the individual experience- highlighting the positive strengths of the person and how they overcame the problem. 

This provides the group to learn about each individual on a deeper level while also focusing on the positive assets of the individual rather than focusing on negatives. 

Assertive Communication Worksheet

Poor self-esteem can impact one’s ability to communicate effectively with others and also bar interpersonal communication with one’s peers because of ineffective skills developed over time. 

It can make it especially hard to express one’s own opinions or even to be able to stand up for one;s self and say no to things that you are uncomfortable with or are against. 

The Assertive communication worksheet can be done individually or as a group activity which begins with discussing what assertive communication is and divides the worksheet into two parts. In the first part,  the worksheet explains the various kinds of styles that you might unconsciously be adopting.

For the second part, recall and write down a scenario in which you’ve used assertive communication or might have failed to use assertive communication.

Reframing Critical Self-Talk Worksheet

This exercise is designed to help groups of students and individuals address negative self-talk and replace them with healthier and kinder ways to address yourself and your circumstances.
