What is self reflection?

Self-reflection is a life skill that involves the ability to introspect- look within- with awareness and curiosity. 

It involves looking into ourselves and exploring our own thoughts, emotions, and our behaviours in order to understand ourselves better. 

Self reflection is one of the major skills required for us to develop awareness related to ourselves in various levels such as:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual

By self-reflection we are choosing to reflect on our own inner workings of our mind and how we react or respond to our inner worlds and the outer world around us. 

Self reflecting involves us taking notice of what we are experiencing- what we are feeling, thinking, and how we are behaving. 

After we take notice, we go on to acknowledge these aspects of ourselves and later on evaluate what we are doing and how they impact our lives. 

It is an essential skill for personal growth since growing involves awareness, self reflection is the tool that allows us to develop insight and awareness into what we might be doing that is unhelpful and is the first stripes to us changing or adopting more helpful ways of being. 

While self-reflection and introspection to ourselves is a wonderful skill that aids in growth, it can also become dangerous when self reflection becomes too obsessive or two critical. Thus it is also important for us to self-reflect on what we are reflecting on while also being mindfully aware of whether our self-reflection is healthy or not. 

To determine if self-reflection is healthy or not is to see whether the self reflection we are doing is helping us to make positive changes that help us improve or not. 

Why Is Self-Reflection Important?

Self reflection is very important for self growth and improvement in the following ways:

  • Self reflection can give you perspective on what is happening to you as it encourages you to take a step back, introspect, and focus on what really matters. 
  • By helping you gain healthier perspectives it can help you make better decisions and in effect help you respond to situations in healthier ways. 
  • It can help us understand who we truly are and empathise with ourselves for the choices that we make and the life that we live, thus helping us be kinder to ourselves.
  • It can help us understand what we are doing that is helping us or that is limisting us, this insight can help us make changes
  • It can help us develops strategies, by pulling on our natural abilities, strengths, and other internal resources., to bring about change.
  • Self reflection can help us remain responsible for our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and in effect keep us accountable for them.
  • It can help us develop healthier relationships with other people as we remain mindful of each other’s needs and boundaries.
