What are suitable spiritual jobs for empaths?

An empath is an individual who is highly attuned with the feelings of other people in their lives. They are called an “empath” because of their high empathy which allows them to also be highly intuitive.

For them, their level of empathy is not only being able to understand the feelings of other people or being emotionally aware of the feelings of other people but they are also able to take on the feelings of others and live through these feelings with them.

Some of the best suitable spiritual jobs for this group of individuals include:

Spiritual Writer

Individuals who are empaths, with the right kind of education and training can become powerful writers because of their ability to connect with the feelings of others.

They are individuals who can describe emotions, and experiences in ways that are so personal and so powerful that they can become influential writers.

An empath who is someone who is strongly spiritual and devoted in their spiritual journey can write about spirituality and the journey itself, as well as help other individuals who are also seeking guidance in terms of their spiritual journey through their books or articles.

Spiritual counsellor

Another great job for this type of person is that of a counsellor. Spiritual counsellors often are trained with the same skills related to counselling as psychologists and other psychological counsellors.

However, their orientation will gear towards spirituality and other religious doctrines that they follow.

Their role is to help young spiritual individual, irrespective of age, to learn how to manage their lives based on the religious context etc, as well as provide a safe space to bring their questions, doubts, and struggles as they provide support for them.

As empaths, these individuals- with the right training- can become immensely helpful to other people in their spiritual journey because of their ability to develop relationships, empathise, and support others without judgement.

Spiritual leader

Another role that they can fit into is that of a spiritual leader where they can use their empathy to instil hope and support in their community and to their followers within the community.

Empaths make great leaders because of their ability to support, listen, and consider the experiences of other people.

However it might be difficult for empaths to socialise in terms of large crowds, however with the right training and support they can become effective spiritual leaders in their community.

Spiritual teacher

Empaths can also play an immense role as a teacher, and guide for other young people who are starting out their spiritual journey and in this sense they can take up prominent roles in the community as they listen, empathise, teach, and guide other individual.

Spiritual business owner

Because empaths tend to like working on their own, independently with the freedom to set their own schedules. They can choose to become spiritual business owners where they can use their spirituality to help other people.

Spiritual life coach

Like the spiritual teacher, instead of teaching doctrines and religious text, this role for empaths can involve helping individuals live life based on their spiritual beliefs.

It involves helping others develop motivation, confidence, as well as build careers for themselves all the while the empath uses their skills to coach the individual to lead fulfilling lives.

Community organisers

Another fantastic role for individual who are moths is that they can become notable community organises that are geared towards bringing the community together for events, for functions, for other purposes.

This role will require them to engage with a lot of people but the work they do within their community to bring about spiritual understanding and growth is something that empaths will gain a lot of meaning and satisfaction from.

What is an empath?

Dr. Judith Orloff is a pioneer in the study and research of Empaths. She describes emotions as people who are more or less like “emotional sponges’ ‘ who are able to “absorb” the emotions and feelings of the world- this include both positive emotions as well as negative emotions.

According to Orloff in her book “The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People,”emaths lack the filter that most people have to protect themselves from excessive stimulation in all five senses as well as the ability to be objective.

This causes empaths to be unable to stop themselves from taking every form of emotions and feelings around them-be it healthy or unhealthy experiences.

It is because of this lack of filtering or the lack of boundaries that leads many empaths to be overwhelmed which is why emaths if they want to live healthy and fulfilling lives require themselves to build healthy boundaries and learn how to regulate their own emotions and that of others in more effective ways.

What are the characteristics of an empath?

Some of the key characteristics of an empath include the following:

  • They have a lot of empathy which allows them to understand the experiences and feelings of other individuals from their perspectives. It is more than just walking a mile in their shoes but rather, an empath can sense and feel emotions as if they’re part of their own experiences.
  • They have really good intuition and gut feelings about other people and the intent of other people. This makes them great at being able to pick out other people’s feelings and true intentions.
  • They tend to take great comfort in isolation and spending time with nature as it allows them to calm down and rest away from the overwhelming sensations and emotions of other people and other things that go on in their lives.
  • They tend to have a hard time being objective which makes it hard for them not to care because they feel with the people around them which leads them to want to help other people.
  • They tend to be somewhat of a counsellor to many people because they are sensitive, and empathetic so people find them to be a source of support but this can tend to overwhelm them.
  • They have an increased sensitivity to the world around them meaning that they are affected by sounds, smells, and other sensations which can lead them to become overwhelmed if this is not balanced.
  • They tend to get burned out easily because of their tendency to feel too much, do so much, and help other people so much that they lose focus of themselves. This can cause them to become burned out.
  • They do not like conflict as they tend to be someone who strives for peace. So arguments and conflict tend to cause them distress and they tend to internalise these negative emotions so they do not like conflicts.
  • They tend to have a hard time setting boundaries in relationships which is why they tend to look at things objectively in their relationships and tend to give until they burn themselves out. Lack of healthy boundaries tend to negatively influence the life of the empath.
