One of the key constructs is stages of change which consists of six stages namely: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination.

These stages are experienced by people who are attempting to change and starts with:

  • Contemplation – here, people seriously considers the need for change
  • Preparation – Starts making small changes
  • Action – Here the person would have been exercising change for less than six months
  • Maintenance – The person would have been engaging in regular exercise lasting longer than six months
  • Termination- where the person has adopted the new behaviours as a way of life. 

These stages are not linear and it is not guaranteed that it will happen one after the other because people who are attempting change also experience setbacks and relapses thus they might have to revisit prior stages before moving forward.
