How was the DISC test developed?

The development of the DiSC theory dates back to 1928 by  William Marston in his book called “Emotions of Normal People.” 

Marston was a lawyer and a psychologist and his influence also includes his contribution inn the development of the first polygraph test. He has authored many self-help books as well. 

While he developed the DISC theory, Marston did not develop the assessment of personality using this theory. It was Psychologist Walter Clark who developed the first DISC assessment based on the theoretical work done by Marston to develop the DISC assessment tool to measure personality. 

Clark’s assessment was the first DISC profile developed in 1956 which included a checkleis of various statements where people had to check as true to them or not. It was developed with the intended use for employers to find qualified employees. 

After Clark, a researcher named John Geir at the University of Minnesota, also adapted Marston’s theory and developed a behavioural assessment known as DiSC test which is now known as the Everything DiSC test. 

It is this DiSC that has given ground for the development of the Tony Robbins DISC test which is now used to promote self-understanding, teamwork and functioning, and role alignment in careers.

  • D Personality stands for Dominance and it involves people who are independent, assertive and decisive.

They are often multitaskers and enjoy taking on new tasks. They work easily with other people and are very confident, talkative, and open to experience.

  • S-Personality type stands for identified Steadiness. These people display a lot of steadiness and tend to be consistent, loyal and supportive individuals in their relationships.

They are active listeners, empathetic, and are helpful. They are also very cooperative and diplomatic. They are good judges and are people who like to maintain relationships. 

These people tend to be calm and often are reserved in their social skills, sticking to a smaller group as they tend to be cautious and assess situations and people first before joining in.

They are also good in using their words and often prefer to build trust and meaningful relationships and are often straight to the point when communicating and getting their work done. 

  • People having C-personalities are analytical and gravitate towards structure and riles. They are very logical and often skeptical in their decision making. They tend to keep their emotions in check and are often logical in their dealing with problems and people. 

Depending on the information passed, they can also change their minds while making swift decisonings- they are great problem solvers. They also tend to be observers and analysers.
